The words in this quote are the very last words in chapter 4.  Scout is talking about what she heard when her tire rolled into the Radley’s front yard.  She is scared and wants to quit playing the Boo Radley game because now she knows that there are for sure people living in the Radley house.  Is it Boo?

What seemed strange to me is that the noise she heard was laughing.  I thought the Radley’s were scary and mean.  Scary and mean people couldn’t have been laughing, they should be yelling.  What is going on with the Radley’s?  Something must have happened to them.

What is going on with a teacher not wanting a student to be able to read and write at an early age?  Yes, we are dealing with a much different time and location- Alabama/1930/40’s- but come on.  Teachers today are struggling to make this happen.  

I think that Lee is trying to make a point about education, perhaps at this time, perhaps now.  Miss Caroline just cannot seem to accept the fact that Scout already knows how to read and write and is ahead of her agenda for the year.  I am eager to see how the relationship of Miss Caroline and Scout is going to progress throughout the novel.  What will we learn about the education system?

Background Info on To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill A Mockingbird is Harper Lee’s classic novel of a lawyer, Atticus Finch, in the deep south defending a black man charged with the rape of a white girl.  It is one of the best-loved stories of all time, because it is told through the eyes of Atticus’ daughter. To Kill a Mockingbird has earned many distinctions since its original publication in 1960. It won the Pulitzer Prize, has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. Most recently, librarians across the country gave the book the highest of honors by voting it the best novel of the twentieth century (Barnes and Noble).

Even though she wrote one of the most famous novels of the 20^th century, much of Harper Lee’s life is still a mystery waiting to be uncovered.
